Marco Blanco Calls on Institutions to Join the National Redress Scheme in ABC News Interview

Marco Blanco, Managing Director of Child Safeguard, appeared on ABC News to discuss the importance of institutional accountability and participation in the National Redress Scheme. Speaking with journalist Karina Carvalho, the conversation centred on the failure of many organisations to take action and support survivors of institutional child abuse.

During the segment, Marco issued a strong statement:

“There is no legitimate reason for organisations to have failed to sign up to the redress scheme by now.”

Supporting Survivors Through the Redress Scheme

The National Redress Scheme was established to provide recognition and support to people who experienced institutional child sexual abuse. Despite being in place for several years, many eligible institutions across Australia have yet to formally join the scheme.

Marco’s appearance on ABC News highlighted the urgency of this issue and the moral responsibility institutions carry:

“Survivors of institutional abuse are tragically dying as they wait for redress,” he said.

Child Safeguard’s Position

Child Safeguard is urging all institutions that work with children—or have historically done so—to sign up without delay. Failure to join the scheme not only denies justice to survivors but also signals a lack of commitment to accountability and healing.

What Should Organisations Do?

  • Review eligibility under the National Redress Scheme

  • Commit to signing up as a participating institution

  • Implement internal reforms aligned with the Child Safe Standards

  • Demonstrate a public commitment to survivors and their right to redress

By taking action, organisations can begin to rebuild trust, show leadership in safeguarding, and stand on the right side of history.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What are the Child Safe Standards in Australia?

The Child Safe Standards are a set of principles designed to help organisations create safer environments for children. They are legally required in several Australian states and apply to all organisations that work with or provide services to children and young people.

Complying with child safety laws helps protect children from harm, ensures legal accountability, and reduces reputational and operational risks. It also demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to creating a safe and trusted environment.

Any organisation that works with children – including schools, sporting clubs, religious groups, charities, and local councils – must meet child safeguarding requirements, including implementing the Child Safe Standards and Working With Children Checks.

Organisations can strengthen child safety by conducting risk audits, developing clear policies, providing staff training, and embedding the Child Safe Standards into everyday operations. Partnering with experts like Child Safeguard ensures these practices are effective and compliant.
